FORTUNE TELLER

"FLIP-FLOP"

Working with partners, students (using a set of walkie-talkies or other telephone props) carry on a conversation. Careful: one partner does not see the other partner during the conversation.

A
1. Dial the number to call friend.
Wait for an answer.

2. Identify self and greet friend.
Inquire about friend's health.

3. Answer question, then add a few
interesting details!

4. Turn down invitation. Give an
appropriate excuse.

5. Respond appropriately then end conversation politely.

B
1. Ring! Ring! Answer the
phone. Identify self.

2. Answer question. Ask
question re: last night.

3. Invite friend over to
watch T.V. tonight.

4. Make a comment about
what friend said.

5. Say something appro-
priate; end phone call.

"LISTS, LISTS, LISTS"

In small groups, have students compile lists of things/people with a common theme. Example: what people wear, hear, eat, read, play; what things open, close; description of parents, teachers, sibblings; which t.v. shows/movies they like/dislike. Students then compose a sentence/ask a question using list words/people.

"Find the Imposter"

Using single vocabulary items or phrases/expressions projected on a transparency or on a dittoed sheet, students, individually or in small groups, are asked to identify the "imposter."
example: hat coat banana gloves shoes shirt book pencil pen chair paper ruler

to be hungry; to be thirsty; to be 16 years old; to be happy

VARIATION: Students can be asked to add to the list of similar category of items or expressions, or use appropriate synonyms for the ones already listed.
