Applying for a Job The Interview
(Applicant approaches the secretary's desk.)
Secretary: Yes, may I help you?
Applicant: Yes, I have an appointment to see the personnel director.
Secretary: Your name, please?
Applicant: I'm (your name)
Secretary: (on the phone) Mr. Jones..there's a................ here to see you. Okay. (Looking at Mr......) Mr. Jones will see you now.Applicant: Thank you. (Applicant walks into Mr. Jones' office) Hello I'm....... (reaches out to shake hands with Mr. Jones.)Thank you for seeing me.
Mr. Jones: (Shaking applicant's hand.) Have a seat ............ I've just been reviewing your resume' and see you are doing graduate work in mathematics. How long have you been in America?
Applicant: About 2 years.
Mr. Jones: And how do you like it here?
Applicant: I like it very much, but sometimes I miss my home.
Mr. Jones: Yes. I'm sure it must be difficult. I notice you worked as a tutor in your home country. Have you ever taught (your language) to foreign students?
Applicant: No sir. But having studied English as a foreign language, I believe that I could easily adapt my teaching style to accommodate foreign students.
Mr. Jones: I see. What did you like best about tutoring students back home?
Applicant: I enjoyed seeing the spark in their eyes when something difficult finally made sense. It made me feel good to know that I was getting through.
Mr. Jones: And what did you like least about tutoring?
Applicant: That's a difficult question because I enjoyed my job so much, but I guess if I had to pick one thing it would have to be grading papers.
Mr. Jones: I see. Yea, that's probably the one thing most teachers dislike the most. How many classes are you taking this semester?
Applicant: Only three. It's only 9 semester hours and all three classes meet in the evening, so they shouldn't interfere with the ..........class because it meets in the morning, right.
Mr. Jones: Yea right. Well then (pauses to think) I think we will be able to put you to work fairly soon. Can you give me a call Friday morning around 10 o:clock or so? I'll be able to let you know something for certain at that time.
Applicant: Certainly. I'll call you then, and thank you for seeing me. Good bye now.
