Words Borrowed from French

1) canoe: A light, slender boat that has pointed ends and is propelled by paddles.

2) resent: To feel indignantly aggrieved at.

3) chef: A cook, especially the chief cook of a large kitchen staff.

4) envelope: A flat, folded paper container, especially for a letter.

5) coward: One who shows ignoble fear in the face of danger or pain.

6) pumpkin: a fruit widely associated with Halloween

7) identity: The distinct personality of an individual regarded as a persisting entity, individuality

8) plaque: A film of mucus and bacteria on a tooth surface

9) category: A specifically defined division in a system of classification, a class.

10) resume' : A brief account of one's professional or work experience and qualifications

11) trophy: A prize or memento, such as a cup or plaque, received as a symbol of victory

12) satellite: An object launched to orbit Earth or another celestial body.

13) statue: A likeness sculpted, modeled, carved, or cast in material such as stone, clay or bronze.

17) fortress: especially a large, permanent military stronghold that often includes a town.

18) aviation: The operation of aircraft.

19) rendezvous: A meeting at a prearranged time and place

20) scandal: A publicized incident that brings about disgrace or offends moral sensibilities

21) chauffeur: One employed to drive a private automobile

22) pilot: One who operates or is licensed to operate an aircraft in flight

23) retire: To withdraw from one's occupation, business, or office, stop working

24) citizen: A person entitled by birth or naturalization to the protection of a state or nation.

25) pessimism: A tendency to stress the negative or unfavorable or to take the gloomiest possible view

26) platform: a stage for public speaking or a landing alongside railroad tracks

27) baton: A hollow metal rod with a heavy rubber tips that is twirled by a drum majorette

28) republic: A political order in which elected officers represent the general public

29) debris: The scattered remains of something broken or destroyed

30) device: A contrivance or an invention serving a particular purpose

31) caffeine: a stimulant found in coffee

32) emotion: a strong feeling

33) gravity: The force of attraction exerted by a celestial body upon objects at or near its surface

34) caramel: A smooth, chewy candy made with sugar, butter, cream or milk, and flavoring.

35) district: A division of an area, as for administrative purposes.

36) banquet: A ceremonial dinner honoring a particular guest or occasion.

37) coupon: a ticket or advertisement, that entitles the bearer to certain benefits

38) pottery: Ware, such as vases, pots, bowls, or plates, shaped from moist clay and hardened by heat.

39) hotel: An establishment that provides lodging for travelers and other paying guests.

40) espionage: The act or practice of spying or of using spies to obtain secret information

41) grenade: A missile designed to be thrown by hand or deployed by a specially equipped launcher

42) blouse: A woman's or child's loosely fitting shirt that extends to the waist or slightly below

43) patriot: One who loves, supports, and defends one's country.
